Curriculum Vitae

After school in Portsmouth, I received my undergraduate medical education at The London Hospital Medical College (University of London). I qualified in 1963, MB. BS. MRCS. LRCP.

My house officer posts at The London Hospital, St Charles Hospital and Evelina Children's Hospital prepared me for a year as a single handed ship's surgeon.

Following attendance at The Postgraduate Medical School advanced medicine course held at Hammersmith Hospital, I worked at that hospital as a locum senior house physician prior to appointment as medical registrar at St Andrews Hospital (Bow).

When I left that hospital, I continued my training at Westminster Hospital as resident medical officer. The post involved organising the Accident and Emergency Department, as well as working in that department and supervising my juniors. I had additional duties as registrar in Rheumatology and Cardiology.

On completion of this job I was appointed as medical registrar in the Westminster group, specialising in Neurology, Gastroenterology and Clinical Therapeutics.

My full time training in Rheumatology started at West Middlesex Hospital in 1971. During tenure of this post I obtained the MRCP diploma from the Royal Colleges of Physicians(UK). I then continued as a Senior Registrar in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation at King's College Hospital.

I was appointed as Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation at Newham Hospital and London Hospital (now Royal London) in 1976. During the time spent there, the London Royal College of Physicians elected me FRCP.

I left the National Service in 1999, but have continued practice in London and Kent. I am registered at the Royal College of Physicians (London) for Continuing Professional Development.

As a Consultant Rheumatologist and Orthopaedic Physician, working in Private Practice and The National Health Service, my duties include running the Problem Spinal Clinic at The Royal London Hospital.

My other appointments included Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation to Newham Healthcare Trust, and to The National Port Employers.

My practice involves treatment of injuries and arthritis. Treatments provided include spinal and joint manipulation, joint and soft tissue injections, and spinal injections, such as epidural, prolotherapy and nerve blocks. Rehabilitation of these and other problems is also covered.

My interest in Spinal Manipulation and Injection treatments started whilst I was working at Westminster Hospital.

Later I was council member for the British Society for Rheumatology, the Institute of Orthopaedic Medicine and Society for Orthopaedic Medicine. I am currently council member for British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine.

I am an examiner for The Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine, and teach this subject regularly, to postgraduate and undergraduate students of medicine and physiotherapy.

I organised the Millennium Meeting of the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine and spoke about the "New Rules" relating to Medicolegal Reports.

I make regular presentations and contributions at the Member's Forum of BIMM and at the Rheumatologly Department meetings at Royal London Hospital.

I have contributed the Section "Medical Malpractice Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine" for "Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine" (Elsevier).

I have prepared Medical Reports regularly from 1968, and first appeared in court as a witness in 1963.

My expertise includes evaluation of skeletal and soft tissue conditions and injures, sustained in road traffic accidents and at work, including upper limb disorders (repetitive strain) and the relationship between trauma and arthritis, rheumatisum and allied conditions such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy - Sudek).

My practical therapeutic experience means that I can report with authority on a wide range of diagnoses and their treatment.

I am recognised by the major medical insurance companies as qualified to advise and supervise treatments given by physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors.

My instructions in the recent past have been split approximately equally between "Claimant" and "Defendant", with about 30% of cases as Single Joint Expert.

Negligence cases involving doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors are covered.

In the past year I have appeared in court, instructed by solicitors for both "Claimant" and "Defendant".

I have been preparing report for asylum seekers alleging torture for about eight years. I recognise likely psychological consequences of such ill treatment, but cannot comment in detail as an expert on these aspects of cases.

I am familiar with the recent changes in court rules, and provisions for Single Expert Reports. I have attended courses of further instruction including "Update" in summer 2002, to ensure that my knowledge is appropriate, and prepared reports as Joint Single Expert. I have lectured on this subject.

Fees depend on the complexity of the case, and are normally acceptable in those cases covered by the legal aid board and it successor. They are based on an hourly rate of £200/hour + vat. Last year I prepared approximately 200 reports.
